Liposuction was the second most popular plastic surgical procedure performed in 2008 with
over 340,000 cases in the US. Liposuction permanently removes unwanted areas of excess fat
through tiny incisions placed in inconspicuous locations such as the belly button, bikini
line or inferior buttock creases. Best results are obtained in patients with good skin
elasticity and normal body weight with areas of disproportionate fat deposition.
Dr. Lu performs tumescent liposuction by injecting the treatment areas with fluid
containing small amounts of adrenaline. This fluid dramatically reduces the amount
of bleeding and bruising, as does the compression foam and girdle worn after the surgery.
While there has been much media attention surrounding laser assisted liposuction, to date
there is no scientific evidence that laser assisted liposuction causes more skin retraction
than tumescent liposuction. Laser assisted liposuction also carries additional risks of heat
damage (burns) to skin and underlying tissue.
